Fall!
We are in the deep days of autumn now. Here in the Pacific Northwest darkness comes earlier each day. The skies are grey more often than not, swordferns are glistening, the alders are bare. Bigleaf Maple leaves carpet the ground in a patchwork of yellows and orange. The Mushroom foragers are out and about in the woods. And, leapfrogging puddles is a bonus exercise on my favorite trails.
Autumn is my favorite season. It’s like a deep exhale after the expansion of summer. It feels like new beginnings. The chance to slow down, reset, and start fresh. It is also a time of vulnerability. Without purposeful rest and proper nourishment after the go-go-go of summer, we can be left depleted, falling prey to the myriad germs that swirl around children and the indoor spaces that we frequent more often when the weather is cold and damp.
Summer!
Summertime is beautiful. It is vibrant. It is abundant. But, surprise, surprise… summer break is not truly a break. It’s a season of busy-ness. It is a different combination of responsibilities—a shift in routines and jumbled up schedules. Around here summer is full-on. It’s the season of long days packed with activity. It’s sunshine, it’s social, it’s movement, and momentum. It’s hard work and hard play.
Here in the Pacific Northwest we make the most out of each precious blue-sky day. From sunrise to sunset, the days are long. In three short months we try to squeeze as much sunshine and activity out of the days as we can. Summer is joyful and exuberant. I find myself living in a more outward and extroverted way, open to new opportunities and experiences.
It’s easy to fall out of balance in the summer. With so much going on we can find ourselves on the road toward exhaustion and burnout.
For me, being mindful of replenishing my reserves is essential.
Because my schedule in the summer changes from day to day and week to week, I try to keep some things consistent. Incorporating 4 pillars of wellness into my daily routine during the months of summer helps keep me grounded and focused.
Spring!
Spring is here! Days are longer now, the earth is warming, fruit trees are blooming, and bulbs and fungi are emerging from the dark, damp soil. It is the season of awakening. Beautifully intricate birdsong, the buzzing of bees, and a raucous choir of frogs are background music here in the northwest woods.
Springtime is hope— a reminder that darkness will pass.
There is something about the first delicate flowers after winter that seem to remind us to be gentle with each other, and with ourselves.
I hope you are able to take a few moments each day to take in the changes and savor the beauty, no matter how small.
There is always a little ray of dandelion sunshine bursting forth from a crack in the concrete somewhere...
Simplify Your Morning Routine
Eat a Wholesome Breakfast and Streamline your Morning
We may idealize a spacious and relaxed morning routine. But, in reality, mornings often feel rushed. There are so many things that need to be done. Maybe you have kids to get ready for school, have pets that need attention, lunches to pack, not to mention the need to get out the door for work…It’s so easy for nutrition to go by the wayside. We live in a culture of grab and go…
But we all want to start the day with a healthy foundation— a quick meal that will be both satisfying and fuel us with energy for the day ahead.
Creating Goals for Wellness
Here we are on the cusp of spring, well into the new year. What goals did you set for yourself this year?
I don’t know about you, but I’m not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions. I don’t make them anymore. They feel like lofty ideals— rules that we are bound to break. I do, however, start the year with specific goals. One of my goals for this year (well, every year, actually) is to stay as healthy as possible, to improve my energy levels and to feel mentally clear and focused. Having goals makes it easy to break down into actionable steps.
